Love Beija is dedicated to the black women musicians who have inspired me. Thank you Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Nina Simone for your examples of strength through music and tenacity in life. It empowers many, including me.

The album name, Love, Beija, pays tribute to Ella Fitzgerald’s album Love, Ella.

Even though I am not covering any of her songs, I want to honor Ella’s musical genius and impact on my musical journey through this album.

Thank you Etta James for Feeling Good, Nina Simone for I’d Rather Go Blind, Gnarls Barkley for Crazy, and The White Stripes for Seven Nation Army. 

As an artist covering these songs, I want to acknowledge these artists’ journeys. The majority of the musicians covered in this album are black- CeeLo Green, Danger Mouse, Etta James, and Nina Simone- and performed in an industry full of systemic racism, often through whitewashing. Because of this, I want to give clear credit to the performance artists who popularized these songs. I also hope Love, Beija inspires you to listen to more of their music.
